Fasting, Abstinence, and Alms Giving

FASTING: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday those who are healthy and between the ages of 18 – 60 are allowed only one full meal. Two smaller meals are allowed as needed but there should be no eating between meals.

ABSTINENCE:  To abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent means to not eat meat on those days.  It does not intend the omission of eggs or dairy products.

“The Church no longer attempts to prescribe Lenten practices in detail.  The above regulations simply highlight Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the other Fridays in Lent.  The more fundamental obligation is to make Lent a penitential season, choosing practices that are adapted to one’s own circumstances.”  We practice both fasting and abstinence as an act of penance – an act of sacrifice, that helps us grow in freedom to make much bigger sacrifices.

ALMS GIVING:  CRS Rice Bowl Collections are ongoing during Lent.  These funds are directed to needy families across the world per the mission of Catholic Relief Services.  Collections returned 4/10 – 4/25.
